lesson 1:
attribution theory

What is attribution theory?

Atribution theory explains how individuals interpret events and how this relates to their thinking, motivation, and behavior.

Attribution theory encompasses three dimensions – stability, controllability, and locus of control.

Within these aspects are four components that individuals attribute the outcome of the situation to: effort, luck, ability, and task difficulty.

Which one of these components do you all think is controllable? Would it be important to focus on the controllable? Because all of these together impact one’s perception of events and how they affect their thinking, behaviors, and motivation.

This table breaks down how we perceive situations and outcomes

Let's look at some videos to deepen your understanding

The first one is theory-based (initially for students, but applies for all achievements and situations).

The second video shows a practical example of how we tend to perceive and apply specific attributions in a real-life situation.

Now, let's put the knowledge you just gained into application

Pull the situation and its outcome from your experience and see how your perception of those would look thought task difficulty, your abilities, your effort, and luck.

In other words, fill out the empty boxes and be more concrete to the particular situation and its outcome:
